Your target is above break-even, so the salon is projected to profit each month.

An estimate assuming costs and customer numbers hold constant. Reality differs: busy months and quiet ones, material prices move, kapsters change. Use it for planning, not certainty.

The numbers that decide a new salon

Contribution margin

Treatment price minus its variable cost — materials plus kapster commission. It's what each treatment leaves toward rent and salaries. Thin margins mean you need a great many customers just to break even.

Capital vs fixed costs

Capital is paid once up front: fit-out, chairs, equipment. Fixed costs recur monthly: rent, salaries, power. They get muddled in planning, but do different jobs — fixed costs set break-even, capital sets payback.

Payback isn't break-even

Clearing break-even means this month didn't lose money. Payback means the whole initial investment has returned — which can take years after a salon routinely breaks even. The two get confused constantly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much capital does a salon need?

There's no single figure — it depends heavily on location, size, and concept. A two-chair barbershop in a suburban shop unit differs entirely from a mall clinic. What this calculator does is help you itemise your own: fit-out, chairs and equipment, furniture, opening stock, permits, plus a reserve for the early months while customers are thin. That reserve is the most commonly forgotten line.

How is salon break-even calculated?

Break-even treatments per month = monthly fixed costs / contribution margin per treatment, where contribution margin = average price − variable cost. With Rp14 million fixed, Rp90,000 average price, Rp30,000 variable: margin is Rp60,000, so break-even is Rp14m / Rp60,000 ≈ 234 treatments a month — about 9 a day across 26 days.

How long until a salon pays back?

Payback = capital / monthly profit, where monthly profit = (target − break-even) × contribution margin. To be clear: if your target sits below break-even, the capital never returns under those assumptions — it isn't 'slower payback'. The calculator warns instead of printing a misleading month count.

What counts as a salon's variable cost?

Costs that appear only with a treatment: consumables (dye, masks, cotton), and kapster commission if paid per treatment. Rent, fixed base salaries, and baseline power aren't variable — they're paid even on quiet days. The commonest misclassification: a commission-only kapster is a variable cost, not fixed, and putting it in the wrong place makes break-even look far lighter than it is.

My break-even looks enormous — what does that mean?

Usually a thin contribution margin or fixed costs too heavy for your scale. If break-even demands more treatments than your salon physically fits, that's not a target — it's a warning the model needs changing: raise prices, cut materials or commission, find cheaper rent, or add chairs. The Capacity & Revenue calculator can check whether break-even still fits your capacity.
