BMI Calculator
Work out your Body Mass Index and see where it falls under both references used in Indonesia: WHO Asia-Pacific and Depkes RI. Free, no signup, runs on your device.
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, nor where fat sits. It can therefore mislead for athletes (heavy muscle, high BMI, low fat), during pregnancy, and for older adults with reduced muscle mass. It's a starting point for a conversation with a clinician, not a verdict.

Your BMI
WHO Asia-Pacific / Kemenkes
Stricter — tuned to metabolic risk in Asian populations.
Your category: Normal
Depkes RI (classic)
Looser, still widely quoted in Indonesia.
Your category: Normal
Why do the two differ? Asian populations tend to show metabolic risk — type 2 diabetes, heart disease — at a lower BMI than European populations with the same body fat percentage. WHO therefore set stricter Asia-Pacific cut-offs. Both are shown so you know which reference a result elsewhere is using.

Understanding your BMI
What BMI measures
BMI compares weight to height: weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. It was designed as a population screening tool — fast, cheap, and good enough to spot trends across large groups. It was never meant to diagnose an individual.
What BMI doesn't measure
BMI can't tell muscle from fat, and doesn't see where fat sits — abdominal fat carries more metabolic risk than fat on the thighs. A muscular athlete can land in the obese band with low body fat.
Why two standards
Asian populations tend to show type 2 diabetes and heart disease risk at a lower BMI than European populations with the same body fat. WHO therefore set stricter Asia-Pacific cut-offs. The classic Depkes RI bands are looser and still widely quoted, so both appear here.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. Example: 60 kg at 165 cm (1.65 m) gives 60 / (1.65 × 1.65) = 22.04. That falls in the normal band under both WHO Asia-Pacific (18.5–22.9) and Depkes RI (18.5–25.0). The calculator does this automatically and shows your band under both standards.
What counts as a normal BMI?
It depends on the standard, which is the commonest source of confusion. WHO Asia-Pacific, used by Kemenkes, puts normal at 18.5–22.9. The classic Depkes RI bands put it at 18.5–25.0. Someone at 24 can be 'normal' under one and 'overweight' under the other — neither is wrong, they use different cut-offs.
Why is my BMI high when I feel healthy?
BMI can't tell muscle from fat. Muscle is denser, so someone who lifts regularly can show a high BMI with low body fat and excellent metabolic health. Conversely, a normal BMI with low muscle and high abdominal fat can carry more risk. Read BMI alongside measures like waist circumference, and discuss it with a clinician.
Does BMI apply during pregnancy, or to children and older adults?
Not in the same way. In pregnancy, weight gain is expected, and guidance is based on pre-pregnancy BMI instead. Children and teenagers use age- and sex-specific growth charts. In older adults, muscle mass declines naturally, so BMI can look normal while composition has changed. This calculator targets non-pregnant adults.
Can this be used to diagnose anything?
No. It's an estimation and early-screening aid, not a substitute for diagnosis or professional medical advice. BMI is one number among many that describe health — blood pressure, blood glucose, lipids, habits, family history. If your figure sits outside the normal range or you have concerns, speak with a qualified health professional.
