Understanding travel markup & margin

Markup vs margin

Markup is computed from cost: price = cost × (1 + markup%). Margin is computed from the selling price: price = cost ÷ (1 − margin%). A 25% markup and 25% margin give different prices — margin is always higher.

Commission from supplier

Besides marking up to customers, some suppliers (airlines, wholesalers, hotels) give a commission on the cost. This adds to your profit without raising the customer price.

Direct-price mode

If the selling price is already set (e.g. following the market), use direct-price mode. The calculator derives profit from the gap between selling price and cost, plus any supplier commission.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate markup on a travel ticket or package?

Markup is the percentage added to cost. Selling price = cost × (1 + markup%). Example: cost Rp1,000,000 with 20% markup → selling price Rp1,200,000, profit Rp200,000 (before supplier commission).

What's the difference between markup and margin in travel?

Markup is measured from cost, margin from the selling price. For the same percentage, margin yields a higher price. On a Rp1M cost: 20% markup → Rp1.2M; 20% margin → Rp1.25M.

What is supplier commission and how is it computed?

Supplier commission is a reward the provider (airline/wholesaler) gives on your sale, computed from cost. In the calculator, enter the commission percent; its value is added to your profit.

What's a reasonable markup for a travel agent?

It depends on the product: flight tickets usually carry thin margins (a few percent or reliance on airline commission), while packages and custom services can be 15–30%. Adjust to competition and your added value.

Does this calculator account for tax?

No. Make sure the cost you enter already includes supplier tax and fees. If your service is taxed, consider raising the markup so net profit still meets your target.
