Understanding the 50/30/20 rule

50% needs

Half of income for essentials: food, housing, transport, bills, mandatory installments. If this exceeds 50%, look for ways to reduce it.

30% wants

For lifestyle: entertainment, eating out, subscriptions, hobbies. This is the most flexible part to adjust when you need to save more.

20% savings & investment

For emergency fund, investing, and paying debt above the minimum. This part builds your future wealth.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the 50/30/20 budget rule?

A method to split net income: 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings/investment. E.g. Rp10M income → needs Rp5M, wants Rp3M, savings Rp2M.

How do I manage a monthly salary?

Start by splitting income into three categories (50/30/20), then compare with your actual spending. Adjust the shares to your situation — the ratio is flexible, not rigid.

What if my needs exceed 50%?

Common in big cities. You can temporarily lower the wants share, find reducible living costs, or increase income. The key is to keep a savings share.

Is the 50/30/20 ratio mandatory?

No. It's a popular guide, not a rule. Some use 40/30/30 or other ratios per their goals. This calculator lets you change the percentages.

Do installments count as needs or wants?

Mandatory installments (mortgage, vehicle loan) generally count as needs. Installments on lifestyle items (paylater for wants) fit the wants category. Classify per your context.
