Understanding emergency funds
Purpose of an emergency fund
A cash reserve for the unexpected: job loss, illness, or urgent needs — so you don't have to borrow or sell assets.
Multiplier by status
Ideally 3–12 times monthly expenses. Single ~6×, family with kids ~9–12×, irregular income ~12× due to higher risk.
Kept in liquid instruments
An emergency fund should be easy to access (savings, short-term deposits, money-market funds), not hard-to-sell assets.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What's an ideal emergency fund?
Generally 3–12 times monthly expenses depending on status. E.g. Rp5M expenses and single (×6) → target Rp30M. Enter expenses and status for your figure.
How do I calculate an emergency fund?
Multiply essential monthly expenses by the multiplier for your status. If you have some already, the shortfall divided by your saving ability estimates months to reach the target.
Why do freelancers need a larger fund?
Because income is irregular and can drop anytime. A ~12-month reserve provides a safer cushion than a permanent employee with more stable income.
Where should I keep an emergency fund?
In liquid, low-risk instruments: savings, short-term deposits, or money-market funds. The key is easy access when needed, not chasing high returns.
Is an emergency fund needed if I have insurance?
Yes. Insurance covers specific risks (health, life), while an emergency fund covers immediate cash needs and things insurance doesn't. They complement each other.
