Understanding inflation

Money's future value

Prices rise due to inflation. Rp100M today will need a larger nominal in the future to buy the same goods. FV = value × (1 + inflation)^years.

Purchasing power

The reverse: money in the future equals a smaller value in today's purchasing power. Purchasing power = value ÷ (1 + inflation)^years.

Why saving alone isn't enough

If savings returns are below inflation, your money's purchasing power actually declines. So it's important to place some funds in instruments that can potentially beat inflation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate money's future value?

Multiply today's value by (1 + inflation)^years. E.g. Rp100M, 4% inflation, 10 years → about Rp148M. You'd need Rp148M in the future for today's Rp100M purchasing power.

What is purchasing power?

Purchasing power is money's ability to buy goods/services. Inflation erodes it: Rp100M in 10 years equals only part of its value at today's prices.

What's the average inflation in Indonesia?

It varies yearly, generally a few percent, though it can be higher in certain categories (e.g. education, health). This calculator lets you enter your own inflation assumption.

How do I beat inflation?

Place some funds in instruments that can potentially return above inflation (e.g. funds, stocks, gold) per your risk profile. Keeping all funds in a low-yield savings account erodes value.

Is inflation always bad?

Mild, stable inflation is a normal part of the economy. High inflation that erodes purchasing power quickly is the concern. Good financial planning accounts for inflation.
