Watt vs VA
Watt is the real power an appliance uses; VA (Volt-Ampere) is the apparent power that PLN tiers are based on. VA = Watt ÷ power factor (~0.85). PLN tiers (e.g. 1300, 2200 VA) reference VA.
Diversity factor
Not all appliances run at once. The diversity factor (usually 60–80%) estimates a realistic peak, so the power tier isn't over-sized.
PLN power tiers
PLN offers stepped tiers: 450, 900, 1300, 2200, 3500, 4400, 5500 VA, etc. Pick the tier just above your VA estimate so it's enough without wasting on subscription cost.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a home's electrical load?
Sum each appliance's power (watts) × quantity, multiply by a diversity factor (~70%) for a realistic peak, then divide by the power factor (~0.85) to get VA. Pick the PLN tier just above that VA.
How many VA does a typical home need?
It depends on appliances. A small home without AC may need 900–1300 VA; a home with 1–2 ACs and a pump typically 2200–3500 VA; a large home with many ACs may need 4400 VA or more. Compute from your list for a precise figure.
What is a PLN power tier?
It's PLN's electricity subscription level in VA (450, 900, 1300, 2200, 3500, etc). Higher tiers offer more available power and a higher monthly minimum. Choose one matching real needs.
Can this estimate be used directly to install power?
Use it as an initial picture. Installation and final power sizing should be computed and installed by a certified electrician, who also accounts for cable safety, MCBs, and circuit grouping.
Why is VA larger than total watts after diversity?
Because converting to VA divides by the power factor (~0.85), making VA larger than watts. Meanwhile the diversity factor lowers total connected watts to an estimated usage. Both work together for a realistic result.
