Understanding septic tanks
Water volume & retention time
Wastewater must be held long enough (retention ~2–3 days) for solids to settle and break down. Water volume = occupants × waste/person/day × retention days.
Sludge space
Sediment (sludge) builds up over time and needs its own space so the tank doesn't fill quickly. It sets the desludging period — usually every few years.
Dimensions & absorption
From the total effective volume, tank dimensions (length, width, height) are set. A septic tank also needs an absorption field suited to the soil so effluent seeps away safely.

How do I calculate septic tank size?
Compute water volume = occupants × waste per person per day × retention time (e.g. 3 days), plus sludge space for sediment build-up. That total effective volume is then turned into tank dimensions (length × width × height).
What dimensions for a home septic tank?
It depends on occupants. For a 5-person home, the effective volume is usually a few cubic meters, with typical dimensions around 1.5–2 m long, 1 m wide, and 1.5–1.8 m tall. The calculator estimates from your input.
What's the standard reference for septic tanks in Indonesia?

Does a septic tank need an absorption field?
Yes. After water passes the tank, the effluent must seep through a soak pit/field sized to the soil's absorption. Clay absorbs slowly and needs a larger field than sandy soil.
How often should a septic tank be desludged?
Depending on size and use, generally every 2–4 years. Adequate sludge space extends the interval. Avoid harsh chemicals that kill the decomposing bacteria inside the tank.
