Understanding cash flow

Net cash flow

The difference between total cash in and cash out in a period. Positive net means cash grows; negative means cash falls even if the business looks 'profitable' on paper.

Ending balance & projection

Ending balance = opening balance + net cash flow. In a projection, this month's ending becomes next month's opening, revealing when cash may run thin.

Profit ≠ cash

A business can be profitable yet short on cash if there are many credit sales or piled-up stock. Cash flow tracks the actual cash available.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate business cash flow?

Sum all cash in, subtract all cash out for net cash flow. Add it to the opening balance for the ending balance. The calculator also projects it several months ahead.

What's the difference between cash flow and profit?

Profit is revenue minus costs (including non-cash items). Cash flow is the actual cash in and out. A profitable business can still run out of cash.

Why is a cash flow projection important?

So you know early when cash may go negative, letting you arrange a loan, collect receivables, or delay spending before problems hit.

What should I do if cash flow is negative?

Speed up collections (chase receivables, ask for deposits), slow spending, cut excess stock, or arrange reserves/loans. Change the numbers to test scenarios.

Does this include tax?

Enter tax as one of the expenses if relevant. The calculator models any cash in and out, so it's flexible for your situation.
