Understanding the reorder point
Reorder point (ROP)
The stock level at which you must reorder. ROP = (average sales/day × lead time) + safety stock. When stock hits this number, order immediately.
Lead time
The time from order to arrival. The longer the lead time, the higher the ROP, since you need enough stock to cover the wait.
Safety stock
A buffer for demand spikes or supplier delays. Enter it manually or compute from (max sales − average) × lead time.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the reorder point?
ROP = (average sales per day × lead time) + safety stock. E.g. 20 units/day, 7-day lead time, 0 safety stock → ROP 140 units. When 140 remain, reorder.
What is safety stock and what's ideal?
A buffer so you don't run out when demand rises or the supplier is late. One way to compute it: (max sales per day − average) × lead time. Match your fluctuation level.
When should I reorder stock?
When stock reaches the reorder point. That way, remaining stock covers sales while new goods are in transit, avoiding stockouts.
What if supplier lead time varies?
Use the realistic longest lead time, or add more safety stock. Unstable lead time raises stockout risk, so more buffer is needed.
Is the ROP the same for all products?
No. Each product has different sales velocity and lead time, so its ROP differs. Compute per product, especially for best-sellers or hard-to-reorder items.
