How to calculate plaster & skim coat

Plaster = base layer

Plaster is the cement-sand layer that levels the brick surface before finishing. Common thickness is ~1.5 cm with a 1:4 mix. Cement and sand needs come from wall area × coefficient per m².

Skim coat = smooth top layer

Skim coat is a thin layer of pure cement over plaster, making the wall smooth and paint-ready. Skim only needs cement (no sand), about 3.25 kg/m². Enable the skim option if the wall will be skimmed.

Count both faces if needed

Walls are usually plastered on both faces. Make sure the area you enter covers all surfaces to be plastered, and subtract openings like doors and windows.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much cement and sand for plaster per m²?

For 1:4 plaster at 1.5 cm thick, typical needs are about 7.8 kg cement and 0.023 m³ sand per m². The calculator totals this by your wall area, then converts cement to bags. All coefficients are adjustable.

How much cement for skim coat per m²?

Skim coat uses only cement (no sand), about 3.25 kg per m². If you enable the skim option, the calculator adds this to total cement, so you know the total bags to buy at once.

Does plaster thickness affect the needs?

Very much. Thicker plaster means more cement and sand. This calculator's default is ~1.5 cm. If your wall is uneven and needs thicker plaster, raise the cement and sand coefficients under Advanced Settings.

Is brickwork included?

No. This calculator is specific to plaster and skim coat. Bricks and their laying mortar are calculated separately in the brick calculator. Combine both for a complete wall material picture.

How do I estimate the cost?

Enter the cement price per bag and sand per m³ in the price fields and the calculator computes the material cost. For a full BoQ including plasterer labor, the Luxury Art team can help.
